The Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) is the most accessed primary healthcare program in the country. NPSA members' role as medicine wholesalers underpins the PBS.
Our distribution network built over 100 years provides all Australians equity of access to vital medicines no matter where they live, generally within 24 hours.
The PBS’s unique primary care experience for all Australians is made possible by the Community Service Obligation (CSO).
The CSO is a direct partnership between NPSA members and Government ensuring timely access to medicines for all. It is a guarantee that provides Government with supply chain reliability and transparency.
Working at the heart of the nation’s health system, NPSA members help to ensure that whenever disaster strikes, Australians can still access the vital medicines, vaccines and healthcare products they need.
Given NPSA members unique position in the supply chain, we were able to assist Government and broader supply chain stakeholders to deliver medicines through lockdowns and state border closures, and to actively manage onshore medicine shortage through provision of real-time data and advice.
The PBS is the most relied upon primary healthcare program in Australia.
It provides the community, whether in cities, remote locations, the country or the coast, equal access to medicines all year round.
This unique service for all Australians is made possible by the
Community Service Obligation in partnership with Government.
Our state-of-the-art distribution centres seamlessly manage and deliver PBS medicines around the country, many of which require additional security or end-to-end cold chain transport.
Our members' workforce is highly trained in the safe management of medicines.
We have made the commitment under the CSO to stock the full range of PBS medicines.
Our members' specialised network manages, dispatches, and delivers more than 2 million medicine and healthcare products per day.
Our members deliver PBS medicines to every community pharmacy in the nation as well as primary care locations, hospital and aged care facilities
Australians have come to trust being able to have their prescriptions filled quickly and reliably whether they live in the city, rural and remote areas or indigenous communities.
Our partnership with Government to deliver the PBS via the CSO ensures that Australians have access to medicines all year round no matter where they live.
Our partnerships extend beyond the PBS distributing all products and devices listed on the NDSS to support Australians living with diabetes. Our members underpin the NatRUM Progam ensuring consumers can safely dispose of their unwanted medicines at all community pharmacies around Australia.
